“Male Nipple Function?”

The mural "Male Nipple Function?" stems from a series of paintings I've been working on called "The Self Awareness Series". In this series of works I've focused on parts of the body as elements of design, aiming to broaden respect for our form and to show how we are all extensions of natures masterful creative force. This particular piece states a question that I hope drives the viewer deeper into the understanding of how and why men develop nipples. When you realize that both males and females follow the same blue print during the first couple weeks of cellular division in the womb, you start to see a unification of the sexes. This in turn brings up ideas of why the female nipples have become so sexualized and objectified in current culture, yet the male nipple has not. The female nipple has been hidden from the world through algorithms and clothing, while the male nipple runs free, even though they both come from the same place.

Mitch Bierer

I started playing around with spray paint in sewers as a kid, all the while I witnessed my grandfather painting giant murals in his small town. Fast forward 10 years or so and I find myself in school studying art via scholarships. I hunkered down and learned everything I could about art history, and art creation, and developed a eye for both absorbing art, and creating it. Post college I was lost and longing for direction, so I picked up the spray paint can again and just like my grandfather had done, I went big. Most of this work was done in abandoned buildings, which was very freeing compared to the restrictive nature of the canvas. Combining the classical approach to fine art with the freedom of street aesthetics I started to find my voice and developed a unique style.
